2016 was a pretty dramatic year one way or another, and who knows what is in store for us in 2017. Whatever comes we know there will be good and bad, loss and gain, hope and despair. There will be challenges and opportunities and there will always be the questions that humans have asked themselves in every time and place. What is it all for? What is the meaning of life? Why was I born? Who am I? What shall I do?
These are the basic questions of vocation: who am I? and whose am I?
The first step to beginning to explore the answer to the question ‘who am I?’ is knowing to whom you belong. You are God’s.
Vocation is about knowing who God calls you to be. Who is the real you? What sort of presence are you in the world? Who has God created you to be? And what might you do in response to all of that?
Although these questions are universal, we can only really ask them in our own contexts; aware of the gifts, aptitudes, passions, opportunities and challenges that make up our life.
Whatever this year throws out and however it turns out, it is an opportunity to see who God is calling you to be. The real you with the things that make you tick and the things that make you sick. God has called you to be part of God’s kingdom and your part is different than everybody else’s. Maybe this year it is time to explore God’s call and to listen to who God is encouraging and equipping you to be in the world.
